Looking Furthur

I have been thinking about the coming winter lately

It would be better to just enjoy the very nice summer we have been having

but I watch the plants

I see Summer fading

I  dream of futures past

and plans must be made!

My mind drifts to the Fall and Winter swells that will arrive,

precisely in their time.

My goal is the classic "get away from it all"

maybe tramp around a bit in search of a pristine peak.

I usually can't get away for a long spell

but a two day trip is not out of the question.

Maybe just a nice long walk would be sufficient to get me away from the road and away from the worst of the crowds.

The pack above made by Rivendell Mountain Works could be just the thing to bring in my mat, a wetsuit, fins, lunch and misc. There are a few custom options as well and it has the added benefit of being produced by a cottage industry by people that really care about the product.

I know I'm not the first to contemplate this sort of thing, what are you using to lug about your gear?

Crystal Voyager at Shelter on Saturday

I have never seen the whole movie end to end

I've seen the You Tube clips but never the whole movie.

Combine that with watching it outside on a summer evening with the local crew

It's gonna be great! I hope to see you there.

Free Outdoor Screening of George Greenough and Albert Falzone’s Classic Surf Film
“Crystal Voyager” on July 30th!
2148 E 4th St
Long Beach, CA 90808

Check out the Shelter pages (blog, facebook etc) for more info

Lots out there on the internets this morning

Check out Cyrus Sutton's two part series on Wayne Lynch at Surfers Journal

Mr. Lynch has discovered the joy! A very nice piece and an interesting look at one of surfing most creative individuals.

Saving perhaps the best for last is a piece on the UK Mat Surfers site by our own Greyman.

All that Matters

very good stuff!

Look another mat meet on the horizon!

Looks like the next mat meet will be at Cottons.

Date as yet to be determined

We need a swell and the tide shouldn't be too high etc

Looking forward to seeing some more new faces as we continue our southerly meander.

The whole thing has a Johnny Appleseed meets Gathering of the Tribes meets Woodstock feel to it.

Some overnight camping and the whole deal would blow up!
(but only half way because...well you know)

The middle of next month looks favorable but it all depends on the swell.

It's hot

not really summer heat wave hot
but hot enough for me to open the door to let in some of that delightfully cool pre-dawn air in.

It has come to my attention that the Nike US Open of Surfing 2011 is starting up this weekend so be fore warned that traffic, hodads, creatures of the night, a little bit of everything will be descending on HB for the next week to ten days.

Probably not any different that any other summer weekend at the beach.

They have built a massive action sports complex just south of the pier so maybe 11 on a scale of 10 on the crazy meter.

If you follow the link above, you have my condolences

Here is a picture of Huntington on a winter weekday

Just imagine what the summer weekend contest crowds will be like!

I am, quite literally, as we speak (IM ing SurfSister in another window) trying to figure out a place for the next mat meet. (Did you know she doesn't drink coffee!?)

Anyway this is your chance to have some input to the meets.

I got an email from MAT MAX regarding the new site he setup.

Swap Obs Rather Than Money is a barter site so if you have ever been curious about how the whole barter economy works give it a look see.

On a side note, if the powers that be, and by that I only sort of mean the Congress of the United States doesn't get their act together we may all become very familiar with the barter system in short order.

Anyone interested in some tomatoes? The heirloom ones are groovy (sorry couldn't resist), the Roma's are volunteers from last year and the delicious dots to the right are Sun Golds

At least it's better than working

So back to work this morning
my ever so short vacation
disappearing in the rear view mirror
like the extinguished side of the road grass fire
that tied up the freeway for hours
on our last trip back up from SD

checking my mail this morning
dozens of requests
all the corporate equivalent
of the shapers lament
"is my board done yet?"

No and at the current rate
you won't see your
report or account or data or
have your problem fixed
hell freezes over
or at least until
which ever
comes first

Never go on vacation
and if you do
never come back!

Surfwise you'll need to cobble together
several small wind swells
a decent tide
a just deal with a bit of wind
to get something good to ride
or you can just
jump in the water
and enjoy the day!

At least it's better than working

The end

It was a great tour

See you from the couch again next year!

Custom water camera used to shot Big Wednesday

Found this over on Surfer.mag

A variety of items being auctioned off

George Greenough water camera used to shoot Big Wednesday
The ultimate Greenough find! The modified movie camera that he used to film the segments in “Big Wednesday” and other film projects. In George’s own words: “This camera was custom built to shoot surfing in 35mm using Panavision lenses up to 200mm. The original camera is an Arriflex II C. The problem with putting this camera in a housing was weight. You couldn’t focus and hold the camera at the same time. I needed a balanced shoulder mounted camera to be able to pull focus while shooting. I had to redesign the viewfinder, take the camera apart and build a waterproof, lightweight housing for it. This took about 500 hours to do. The end result was excellent balance while shooting “Big Wednesday.” I used lenses up to 200 mm shooting off a mat. The camera is easy to focus while shooting and I’ve used it for a variety of other projects since.” Now it’s your chance to get a piece of cinematic history. Pre-auction estimate: $10,000-$15,000

No excuses now for not having great water shots!

Heavy swells were expected along Mexico's Pacific coast as Hurricane Dora strengthened into a Category 4 storm Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

I wait all year for this

The tomatoes for sure

Don't they look lovely in my official Pastafarian helmet?

But while they are glorious globes of goodness

The real news is that my wife and I will be on vacation for a few days.

We drop my son off at ComicCon and spend some time enjoying San Diego

Returning everyday like some sort of confused swallow

If you need to reach me I will be on the 2nd or 3rd bench from the top of the Fern Grotto.

*If I'm not there try Con Pane Rustic Breads & Cafe

One more thing

Tropical dancer Dora may not quite be the wave maker we would like here in So Cal.

If you are in Mexico be careful

I'm calling it mat tofu cause there was no mat meet

I had a very nice day surfing yesterday.

Although the waves weren't large, the smaller, shorter waves inside were fun.

You really missed it, you should have been there yesterday!

Kesuke Miyagi says,

"Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off.
Breathe in through nose, out the mouth.
Wax on, wax off.
Don't forget to breathe, very important"

Maybe the worst picture of a surf mat ever!

Tried the waxed canvas surface grip thing that is all the rage over at Surfmatters

Very interesting and I can't wait for Sunday to try it out!

The wax went on well enough

I just put it outside in the sun for the melt in.
No messing with my wife's hair dryer.

For every Father's Day, Birthday etc, as far back as I can remember, my kids have gotten me surf wax for a present. Which is kind of cool since you can always use some wax right? The other neet thing is that since my wife would drive them to the surf shop and they would pick it out themselves I never knew exactly what I would be getting. Ten bars of base coat, some tropical wax in the middle of summer, wax that smells like bacon and eggs, it was always a surprise.  For the last few years I haven't been using a lot of wax ;) so I have lost track of my stash of what must be thirty bars.  So after searching the man cave from top to bottom I came up with the bar above.  Made by the Sex Wax people so I'm sure it is high quality. I know it will work well because it's REALLY TACKY!

Really fabulous!

HB Pier

Putting together a little photo post this morning about HB

Wondering why it feels so strange when I go there

"You can never go home"

but then it occurred to me

it's all gone!

Jan of Jan's Health Bar.  This used to be in the back of Georges surf shop. Jan moved the deal down the street after Georges shop closed down

The Surf Cinema - torn down and replaced by a mini mall

Chuck Dent - There is still a CD shop and boards even but Mr. Dent passed away long ago. The mad rap that was the Chuck Dent experience died with him.

They even torn down the pier and replaced it with a new one!

The wave is the same even though everything else has changed

Carmageddon be damned!

There are several of you out there that may not make it to the Mat Meet on Sunday  due to the closure of the 405 freeway.

Pretty week excuse if you ask me!

While it true that I don't have to use the freeway to get to HB pier

I'll be riding there on my motorized bunny slippers

I thought I would look into the other options

First up JetBlue is offering 4 dollar flights from Burbank to Long Beach airports bypassing the 405 problem areas and while not landing in Huntington per se ,you are at least in a city with Beach in it's name.  You can see Long Beach on a clear day and your could just inflate you mat and paddle down to Huntington!

Sail bikes! Just peddle to the beach, hoist the main sail and glide up or down the coast to your destination.
Remember to bring lemons to fight the scurvy!

Not into the sail bikes? Looking for a low impact workout on the way to the meet? Just hop on the elliptic bike and feel the burn all the way to Huntington!

Why not just take the hover car? It's two thousand eleven people, 1984 was decades ago. In exchange for mind control the government promised everyone a hover car! I know that's true because I read it in my Weekly Reader in grammar school in the early sixties.

If you are worried about traversing a rough neighborhood consider making the trip in this beast.  I'm sure that between the spikes, the creepy red legs walking along and the impeccable Mercedes Benz protection package you will be fine!

You want to come down and bring your friends, family and a few odds and ends? No Problem! Bring everything you need and more and don't worry about the construction on the freeway you can roll right over it!  As far as parking, Huntington has a whole parking lot FULL of vehicles of a similar ilk.

If you are looking for a more Eco friendly vibe on your way to the meet but still can't see yourself rollin up without your music, consider this option. Works for hay and is iPod compatible.

Let's do it!

OK so the sage(s) at SolSpot say,

"Sunday SW swell (190-220) starts to look a bit more consistent; building with periods around 17 to 18 seconds. The average SW facing breaks and ok combo spots will continue to be in the waist-shoulder high range while the top SW breaks and excellent combo spots see some shoulder-head high surf and inconsistent overhead high sets."

I think that Sunday would be a good day to give the south side a go.
Just us, the local body board community and more tourists than you can shake a stick at.

I'm thinking mid morning, (I think black ball starts at 11) until the wind really comes up or arms and legs turn to noodles.

I'll send up some sort of smoke sign

I know we can never have the entire matting community at every event.
People have lives
They need to buy gas and food
There's carmageddon this weekend
All the better to be able to say

"You really missed it! You should have been there yesterday!!!"

What ya reading?

While it is true that winter has more dark hours that are perfect for curling up with a good book,

The summer has more light hours that are prefect for lounging around reading a good book...

what can I say, I prefer reading to TV

I got the literary tip on this one and while I don't often read translated Russian novels this one is quite good!

When I put out the call among the other "Prisoners of Lake Forest" this was one of the suggestions I got back. "Go soak your head" was another but I couldn't find that one at the library.  I have never read LeCarre before and this one is not bad at all.

I avoided SciFi for years.  Although I don't do anything that is even remotely like science I do sit for hours every day in front of a computer. I have always thought of SciFi as a Western mixed with two parts hog wash and a dash of no-way-does-a-computer-system-ever-work-like-that!
It seems that I was misinformed.
There are a host of new writers (and some not so new) that can spin a decent yarn and get the details right.

Reading something good?

Fling me the title in the comments.

If I watch the nightly news I'll break out in a rash

Fluffy is not amused!

All year I patiently wait for summer

I surf a little,

make some pizza

topped with ingredients fresh from the garden

My wife has been known to whip up a little something from the apple tree

Mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic and basil.
Too bad this blog doesn't have Smell-O-Vision!

The end to a truly perfect day includes watching the Tour de France boys pedal through the peaceful French country side.

The riders are OK. If you consider 30 plus stitches OK.  They actually got up after that, got back on their bikes and finished the race!

Two things

Maybe sending out the mat signal for next Sunday on the south side of Huntington Beach pier.  As I mentioned in a previous post they do the black ball thing.
Surf  forecast doesn't look too bad.
Small, but it could be fun!
So let me know if you are in.

Last thing, why is fluffy not amused?

I don't do anchovy  pizza!
