Tuesday Report oh you mean it's Wednesday?

Having survived the long weekend

I noticed that

The weather had decidedly take a turn

for the normal

Late night and early morning low clouds

with clearing in the afternoons

Maybe a bit of wind to keep things

from being too perfect

The picture of Amanda above

a record maker

in her own right

on record

for the Eastern Pacific

could indicate

to the contrary

"fasten your seat belts,

it's going to be a bumpy night"

Happy Memorial Day

Sitting in the morning fog
The cat on my lap purring hard
I listen for the sounds of surf

But it’s only work calling

upcoming long weekend...

This morning I was reflecting on what to do
with a few "free days"
I have coming up
this weekend

There is the perpetual desire to ride the wild surf
always good

(and I save 25% per load, whatever that means.  I have stopped reading ER and ING so I hopeless out of touch with the latest in surf slang. When in doubt it always seems to have something to do with Kelly Slater...)

There is always things to do in the garden this time of year

Which, in my case means eat more tomatoes!
(leaf me alone I'm gardening, nom nom nom...)

maybe figure out where to connect my iPhone to the ole Grundig

The sun is up and it's time to stop fantasizing and get to work

I'll think of something later...

BTW Paul is doing a GREAT series on the design of surfmats, things he has discovered over the decades of designing and riding.  Great Stuff.  Go check it out on Surfmatters

Board Room - via wayback machine

What do you call a group of surf legends?

So whatever you call it
(answer at the bottom)
wherever you turned
you ran into
 literally or figuratively
a Legend in our sport

Rennie - Dreaming of empty Rincon?

Some are just legendarily good people, artists, film makers and the like

Bing and Pez and the rest

Others are the more traditional board makers, magazine publishers, surfers etc

I gathered all of my available courage and walked up to Steve Pezman and thanked him profusely  for making such a great magazine.  I continued to gush that one of the reasons it meant so much to me as a surfer was that I didn't have to read Surfer and Surfing ...

Pez laughed and started looking for the panic button that would alert event security of another nut job...

The pic above has at least 2 and a half Legends in it

The Shape Off

The shape off had an interesting twist this year

"an interesting twist" being an old shaper joke ...
but I digress...

They gave each contestant
a BIG block of foam
(sort of shaped like a refrigerator)
and said,
"you're a shaper...shape something out of that...you have two hours"

no preshaped, close tolerance blank for this one folks

"you want some rocker?
well do ya punk?
go ahead and shape some in"

I resisted the urge to shout
"Is my board done yet?"
There by escaping the pounding I so richly deserved...

I don't know who came up with this idea
but it was brilliant!

We will never see it again.

My favorite part of the show is the stuff people bring in to have appraised
Great Stuff!

Like I said before Lots of Legends
Rich Harbour who most people think of a long board guy
shaped one of the best short boards I ever saw,

Side note
more Legends than you could shake a stick at!
I was starting to test this theory
but in short order
security was called
and they were not amused...
and the stick was confiscated ...

there were even virtual legends on the big screen

BTW this was as close as we got to anything mat related at
The Board Room
Still no Love
for the most advanced surf craft on the planet
Yeah I know
"The Bored Room" an all
but come on
throw a surf sub-culture a
freakin bone people!

* Answer to the question in the first line

What do you call a group of legends?
A League of Legends

** Yes this wan't this years Board Room Show which I'm sure was fantastic.
I used my personal WayBack machine to revisit the Board Room show held in October 2013
San Diego has had a rough week and I figured the last they they needed was a couple of more tourists breathing the local air.

One more day until the wind turns around

I had hoped to do a post today about the release of the Leo Fender's Stratocaster May 15, 1954

but instead I am sitting here stunned that fires are raging thru San Diego

My car is covered

with the ashes

of my neighbor's hopes and dreams

One more day until the wind turns around....

How hot was it?

Too hot for me to write anything that's for sure

so today I have "borrowed" some corny jokes

none of those GMO corny jokes 'cause momma don't allow no GMO corny jokes round here

So how how was it?

the cows are giving evaporated milk.
the chickens are laying hard-boiled eggs
I saw a dog chasing a cat and they were both walkin'
hot water now comes out of both taps.
you actually burn your hand opening the car door.
you realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
the potatoes cook underground, and all you have to do to have lunch is to pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.
farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.
you start putting ice cubes in your water bed.
the four seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot and ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
you eat hot chilies to cool your mouth off.
your dream house is any house in Alaska.
you can make instant sun tea.
your car overheats before you drive it.
you learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.
the temperature drops below 95, you feel a bit chilly.

A couple of more days and things will be back to abnormal

(10 degree drop on Friday and Saturday)

just a few miles inland

Although the high pressure has not moved over the western states
It has setup for the beginning of a decent blow and the accompanying high temperatures

Yesterday, we had a common occurrence
one I remember well from my childhood
high temps, what seemed like zero percent humidity
and offshore wind with some swell in the water!

We would beg our parents (someone with a station wagon)
to please, please, please
take us to the beach!
Where we were sure, offshore groomed perfection
awaited us.

We would arrive
(can't you drive any faster Mom?)
only to find that the beach was beset
by onshore wind!

The off shore breeze not quite strong enough
to counter the regular onshore trend
sometimes we would go out anyway
"I drove you guys here you are going in the water!"
we would drive home
beaten down, tails between our respective legs
only to note that the offshore breeze
picked up again
just a few miles inland...

make sure your pets have plenty of water

I have always liked wood, the textures,

the colors, the grains, trees are amazing

So when I found a set of four maple chairs that were beautiful but in need of a refinish I thought "Why not?"

Never mind that I am not strong with tools of any sort...
if I post a picture of a bonfire later on you will know things didn't go as planned...

These chairs were made by Paul McCobb who stopped making this line in 1964
I must say that for being at least 50 years old they are in excellent structural shape!

They legs go thru the seat and have just these platforms on the bottom.

What could happen?

Since I have been posting pictures of the epi flowers I thought it only fair to show what they look like when they are done.

This is where the magic happens
Which is to say this is where we sit and watch the garden

If you are in SoCal just a reminder that it's going to be hot and windy this week so water your plants and make sure your pets have plenty of water too.

Mother's Day

My Mom and I at Zuma Beach 1960

Soaking rays and wishing I had a mat to ride!
(totally blind in full sunlight and an enormous head, nothing has really changed)

Thanks Mom and Happy Mother's Day!

Who am I to question the weather

As I sit and watch the sun rise

It's a little chilly

this being the week after

and the week before

another spring heat wave

(yes temps in the 90's next week)

and I have to admit that I am

a touch confused with this

meteorological ripsaw

this spring.

normally we are given

to endless fog

with a touch of morning

south wind

but the plants seem to enjoy the heat

Who am I to question the weather

Everyone needs a hobby

First bloom on the new cutting Romantic Nights
I am a bad guitar player

a mediocre gardener (the plants do ALL the work)

and a truly lousy writer

so the search continues

to find something to do

when the surf is flat

the wind is up

the tide is wrong

or it's just plain

dark out side....

In your travels

you could go check out

The San Diego Surf Film Festival

it's running from May 7th thru the 10th

lots of good films and events

always awesome

check it out!

A proper May morning

the strong smell of sage in the air

low clouds restricting the view of the stars

sufficient moisture to make you think twice

"did it rain last night?"

maybe later

a chance of sprinkles

not from a storm

just from all the collected

coastal moisture

south wind before dawn

ruining any change of an early morning surf...

It's so June outside

Friday, May 2, 2014

it's Friday

sitting this morning

providing my professional protection services

whilst also serving as a hot rock

for his majesty

the cat

who is curled up

in my lap

like a furry

cinnamon roll

I am thankful for the

after several unseasonably

warm days

The air is both cool

and moist

two things I have

dearly missed

these last

few afternoons

and as

the sky lightens

from black

to a progression

of blues

and as the stars

twinkle and fade

I'm happy

it's a Friday

This wind is hell on the roses

The cat is not happy

the roses are parched

and I am just confused

The hot Devil Winds are the norm during the late fall

along with 90 degree temperatures along the beaches

but spring time is usually more

late night and early morning

low clouds

with "partial clearing in the afternoon"

could be cold south wind

definitely not a regulation spring

maybe it's a Beltane thing

but a few days of warm temps

I understand there is some swell

I guess I will just have to

sit back and enjoy it
