Five Summer Stories - Tonight

Five Summer Stories came out just a couple of years (1972) after Pacific Vibrations (1970) and although some of the footage was shot during the same Hawaiian winters you can see advancements being made in rail and rocker designs. While the pin tails are still a little sticky off the top they were riding in the tube just fine.  (I think they were thinning out the tails a little more).  One of my favorite parts, NO LEASHES! Somewhere in this clip is a guy doing a nice leave-the-board-behind jump and body surfs the rest of the wave.  Try that with your ankle rope. You can also see a surf mat about 50 seconds in during the babies, dogs and bikini shots.

The Five Summer Stories used local band HONK do the sound track, which did well commercially and you can still see the band play live.

Rick Griffin did great posters for both.

I'm going to a screening tonight.

It's part of the Newport Beach Film Festival which of course is not as nice as the San Diego Surf Film Festival but MacGillivray will be there along with Lopez and Pezman so that should be interesting.

I saw the movie in Seal Beach, I must have went to the early show. I came out super stoked, saw some friends in line and went back into the theatre and watched the whole thing again.

Good observation!

In addition to a more foiled thickness flow, the main board design advancement during that era was that a little bit of tail rocker was interjected. The first miniguns had dead straight tail lift. The second-gen boards typically had just 1-2 inches of tail lift. They were a bit looser, and fit into the tube more naturally.

It was an interesting time, surf styles still reflected a lot of long board influence. not too many things faster that a single fin though...other than a surf mat that is.
