Long hot days

shorts and no socks
punctuated
by brief cool evenings
filled with chips and guacamole
mosquitoes and beer

The Life of Summer
taking off like a bottle rocket
then
slowing ebbing
emitting sparks all the while

the transition
to Fall
imminent
the light changing
from the intense piercing light of midsummer
to the softer shadows of Fall

coming closer
day by day
the tilts and wobbles
of this earth
bringing Fall
to a beach near you
