CH or HW slight return

So the show was last night

So even though the show was sold out, I had my ticket so it was all good

After the show Director Keith Malloy, CoProducer Mark Cunningham did a little Q&A with the audience.

Did I mention that the Wedge Crew was there?

Did I mention that generations of Wedge Crew were there?

Did I mention that Fred "Viper" Simpson was there!

Did I mention that Mel Thoman and Matt Larson were there?

Did I mention that after the show everyone went to Malarkey's?

A great shot of a parking meter with the lineup

So how was the movie?

Fantastic! Go see it.

Buy a copy put in the video player and watch it over and over until you remember why you surf.

Come Hell or High Water

Finally the day has come when we get to see the newest Woodshed film

"definitely different than board surfing"

I like feel of the trailer and I am expecting good things from the movie.

I am planning a little experiment after the movie. You see the theater is about 100 yards from the beach. So out the theater door a quick stop for fins and you could be in the water in 10 minutes. That's how you know you have a truly great surf movie. You are so stoked you want to go surf. Now.

Let's see how many head to the closest beach for a quick session after the film. Drunks don't count.

The old Surf Theater in Huntington was two streets down from the pier, which was and still is lit up well enough at  night to surf next to the pier.  After a good movie it was a given. Cosmic Children, Forgotten Island of Santosha, Pacific Vibrations, Five Summer Stories all these movies were followed up with a surf.

How could you not?

Same as it ever was

There is an article by Woody Woodworth over at  levyusher.blogspot.com that you'll want to read.

The post is called Time Warp and contains the article by Woodworth about surf mats from a 70's issue of Surfer.

It seems that there was a time when the likes of Surfer Magazine would actually run articles that didn't directly support their advertisers and were just about having fun in the water.

Thanks to Woody Woodworth, who is still regarded as a local underground hero in these parts, for writing the article and to the editorial group at the time for running the article.
Gee I wonder what ever happened to that editor?  PG was the editor of Surfer back then ;)

While we are on the subject of out of print articles on surf matting, our own Ramsnake has a link on his blog Magic Towel Ride to several articles he has uncovered in his travels.

Good Stuff!

Notes from all over

Just another morning at 23Breaths

This has to be pointing at a local SoCal beach at some point!

HURRICANE HILARY DISCUSSION NUMBER 23
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP092011
200 PM PDT MON SEP 26 2011

HILARY HAS CONTINUED TO STRENGTHEN OVER THE PAST FEW HOURS...WITH AN
EXPANDING AREA OF COLD CLOUD TOPS AROUND A MORE DISTINCT 10 NM WIDE
EYE SEEN IN RECENT VISIBLE IMAGERY. THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS
INCREASED TO 115 KT BASED ON FINAL-T NUMBERS FROM TAFB AND SAB
ALONG WITH THE LATEST UW-CIMSS ADT ESTIMATES. OTHER THAN CONTINUING
FLUCTUATIONS DUE TO INNER-CORE DYNAMICS...ALL OF THE GUIDANCE SHOWS
SLOW WEAKENING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS HILARY MOVES OVER
GRADUALLY COOLING WATERS. HILARY SHOULD BE ACROSS THE 26C ISOTHERM
BY 72 HOURS...AND RAPID WEAKENING IS EXPECTED AFTER THAT TIME AS
VERTICAL WIND SHEAR ASSOCIATED WITH A MID-LEVEL LOW INCREASES OVER
THE CYCLONE. THE NHC FORECAST IS CLOSE TO A BLEND OF THE SHIPS AND
LGEM MODELS THROUGH THE PERIOD.

Minds in the water website for more information

I had heard they were sold out of tickets for the Thursday show of Come Hell or High Water.
So I called the box office and found out they had 23 tickets left!
No kidding.
Well 22 now.
Stoked!

Misc Video Point Panic

Sifting thru video this morning on you tube I found this little gem

A lot going on in this 4 minute vid.

A speed run up the highway, some wind buffeted camera work, there also seems to be a sound track

Nice waves though

Dogtown and Z-Boys

Small swell, heavy marine layer and some wind left me no choice but to abandon all hope of surfing and watch videos instead.

Although I'd seen a lot of clips I'd somehow never watched the whole movie.

The time period holds personal importance for me.

(I had the sun damaged long blond hair but can't skate)

These guys could definitely skate and surf as well.

They took the tight turns from their surfing and rolled with it.

In the end they repaid the loan by introducing the "Air" to high performance surfing.

When you consider that "did he land that air" is pretty much the gold standard in surfing contest decisions these days it a wonder that Tony Alva isn't an ASP judge.

If you are building the definitive collection of surf / skate movies you will need this one as the corner stone of the skate section.

If you haven't seen it in it's entirety it's still worth viewing.  Dog Town and Z-boys is on the list of 50 documentary films to see before you die.

I found this copy at the local library which speaks to skating's acceptance and its place in modern culture but grinding on the benches outside will still get you a ticket for vandalism by the police.

B&W

It's grey out this morning
Not really raining, thought technically it is but just a heavy marine layer.
A good day for a cup of tea and a browse thru some B&W shots while we wait for the refrigerator repair guy
Maybe sun this afternoon the forecast say this is the warm day for the weekend.

Fall, falling, fallened

Usually my Fall Equinox post is one of my favorites

I'd post a beautiful fall image

Then try to wax poetic about the season change, off shore winds and bigger swell.

Not feeling it today

I could go on, at length about the social contract

But who here really comes to 23B to discuss Rousseau?

Oh you couldn't afford any higher education?

Well then that discussion might be time well spent.

Another time, then.

There is the highly anticipated new movie (CH or HW) from Woodshed

Showings, both up and down the coast are imminent. (thanks Piskian!)

But if you are like me, you have seen the trailer and are just waiting for the movie to show at the local surf theater.

Besides everyone is posting that clip this week.

I could provide some nugget of local knowledge about swell or conditions  (it's gonna be three feet for the next 7 days
(with a blip on Monday))

but you can go to Surf Line, Surf Cast, Wavewatch, or SolSurf just as easy as I can.

I know how about some "latest vacuum packed soul gun as ridden by Rasta"?

looks like a yellow shark

Umm, did that earlier in the week (great stuff Gman! I'm still chuckling)

So I've got nothing for today.

My advice,

Turn off the computer, go outside and enjoy the day!

It's fall!
