When exactly?

did I loose any cool I might have ever had or even aspired to?

Not that I was ever this cool

classic photo of steve by JDub

Or even this cool

But I find myself shopping in Kohl's
pushing the cart

that contains

new bathroom rugs

we intend on purchasing

to feather

our nest

The high point of the day mind you

Scooting along wishing I had a couple of pain killers

I glance to one side and spot an old geezer

and think to myself at least I'm not THAT bad!

Then suddenly realizing,

it was a mirror

But when did it git to this?

Oh well summer is coming, maybe that will help.

Daddy jeans
Crocs
and a Zoo sweatshirt
I trip the light fantastic
Well maybe not light
and clearly not fantastic

Truth be Told

Enough time has passed since the mat meet last summer that some of the more lurid stories can be told.

There was some hassling out in the water.

I remember one wave I took off on and another matter takes off too

But you know, they are on a mat so, ok lets go!

The guy kooks out and does some weird drag ass stall right in front of me!

Fortunately I was able to make it around him

so it's all good!

Big plans for this weekend!

If only I could have saved a few waves from last summer!

But since the forecast calls for rain

I have a date with my recliner

I have finished the William Gibson novels and am working on a book of short stories by Bruce Sterling.

Philm at Eleven?

After a busy couple of days

doing my best

to stand upright

I attempted to connect

with the real world

by turning on the TV.

The BIG NEWS

some kid named

Justin Bieber

got a buzz cut for summer!

Oh and Libya

is in flames

Hundreds are dead, missing or injured in New Zealand

and the US continues to tetter on the bring of financial insolvency.

But enough about that

That Bieber kid was really starting to get shaggy!

I really wasn't that upset about it really
My stock broker has been rockin had the same hair do for years

But I think am done watching the new for a while.

Salmon Season

Have you ever seen pictures of salmon as they swim upstream to their spawning grounds?

I'm just saying

Mat photo by Ken Samuels

I love a good opportunity to go all JJ Moon in the blog-0-sphere, so I am calling this El Rollo Exito the Salmon Jump.

I was having some trouble with the Geo-locator up-link connected to the grid that's on the bottom of my mat.

The grid normal flashes advertisements for whomever has a contract and is in a geographically favorable location (for a free lunch!).

So in order to faithfully discharge my contractual responsibilities, here it the correct version of the photo.

A rest day

Artist: John Hancock

When you have back pain
the standard protocol is to prescribe pills

So after swallowing said pills and performing the standard chants and incantations indicated for this condition I crawled like a reptile to my easy chair to, well, take it easy and perhaps read a book

After an hour of "reading" I can verify that the first word of the book was "The" after that I'm just not sure.
I figured that TV might be a good choice

Television should have been a great thing
allowing universal access to all of the worlds literature in play form,
instant access to important news, weather reports and a wealth of educational programming.

Sadly what is on the nine hundred channels is visual stimulation of the very worst kind
Programing designed to pander to the lowest of human emotions while making frequent stops for
"A brief message from our sponsor"
which is to say products they have to sell you,
that you don't need
at a price that you can't afford
"have your credit card ready"

But hey, I'm in pain
whilst simultaneously high as the proverbial kite,
so TV should be just perfect.
My frontal lobes cooling comfortably on a block of pharmaceutical ice
nothing but my reptilian brain at it's station,
continuing to encourage only the minimum respiration and cardiac functions.

If I was ever in a better mental and physical condition to flop on the couch and engage in some serious tube time, I don't recall.

Fortunately, the "clicker" or remote control device was sufficiently complex enough to thwart my crude attempts at turning on the TV while aligning the dish with the appropriate Geo stationary satellite.

I did manage to catch a little of the local news program / home shopping  /lives of the rich stupid show .

Luckily I managed to fall asleep before too much permanent brain damage could occur.

The Low Down

I am celebrating the long weekend by enjoying 12 different kinds of lower back pain.

Sitting in front of the monitor is no joy for me so sit back and enjoy some clips.

The original music is in the clip below

StyleMasters is great film from the era

Cosmic Children is a classic film, love the Dave Brubeck music

More CC this time a clip from Topanga

Let's All Luge!

It is supposed to rain a lot over the three day weekend come up

NWS SYNOPSIS...A STRONG STORM APPROACHING FROM THE NORTHWEST WILL BRING RAIN...MOUNTAIN SNOW AND LOCAL STRONG GUSTY WINDS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY. SHOWERS WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES AND THERE COULD ALSO BE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS. SHOWERS WILL TAPER OFF SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING. DRY BUT COOL WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK. CHANCE OF SHOWERS AGAIN DURING THE SECOND HALF OF NEXT WEEK.

It's been cold enough in the local mountains for it to snow

So I thought it would be a good time to break out

The Luge!

But I don't look good in licra, so maybe not the luge

But you know something high tech and cutting edge!

Something I can go real fast on

Something where I can obsess about the right piece of high tech equipment to use

Is it still a "quiver" of sleds?

Something I can get some air on!

Ten time world tray champion Kelly Sledder!

I understand that cafeteria tray  sledding is popular, I'll have no trouble making the switch. Its just colder water right?

Maybe we can make a movie

But something tells me I know how these things always turn out

Maybe I stay inside and read this weekend.

Cyberspace

Neuromacer

Mona Lisa Overdrive

Burning Chrome

When William Gibson coined the term Cyberspace he set up the basic framework that sci-fi writers have used and will continue to use for generations.

Why am I mentioning books in a surf blog?

The weather predictions call for more rain in the SoCal area

The planets are aligning for some high tides

Your only hope is a good book this weekend

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a famous woodblock printing by the Japanese artist Hokusai.

The preeminence of this print—said to have inspired both Debussy’s “La Mer” and Rilke’s “Der Berg”—can be attributed, in addition to its sheer graphic beauty, to the compelling force of the contrast between the wave and the mountain. The turbulent wave seems to tower above the viewer, whereas the tiny stable pyramid of Mount Fuji sits in the distance. The eternal mountain is envisioned in a single moment frozen in time.

Hokusai characteristically cast a traditional theme in a novel interpretation. In the traditional “meisho-e” (scene of a famous place), Mount Fuji was always the focus of the composition. Hokusai inventively inverted this formula and positioned a small Mount Fuji within the midst of a thundering seascape.

Foundering among the great waves are three boats thought to be barges conveying fish from the southern islands of Edo (modern Tokyo). Thus a scene of everyday labor is grafted onto the seascape view of the mountain.

Rudolf the Red, Knows Rain Dear

Looking at one weather website it says 30% chance of rain on Wednesday

Another say 70% chance

Nice day today though, we'll just have to wait and see.

One word

Plastics!

A great little video I saw on The Inertia

Plastic State of Mind - OFFICIAL from Ben Zolno on Vimeo.

These offshore wind days we've had in Southern California in recent weeks are good for many things.

Grooming the swells into near perfection comes to mind

Insert "PeeChee Perfect"  wave here.

But another thing they do an amazing job of is collecting those "single use" platic bags and blowing them into the ocean.

Plastics of various kinds blow, flow, wash and do every thing but boggie all the way to the ocean.
Where they have accumulated in what is known as "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch"

Click on the image to enlarge
So what can you do?
Simple!
Get a couple of repeat use bags for the grocery's!
That's not the complete answer but it's a great start

They last a long time, won't break as you bring home the bacon and come in enough sizes and shapes to make you smile when you see them.

What it boils down to to is that

Enjoy your weekend!

must get over the hump

If the dry parched feeling in your throat this morning, that was remedied by a slurp of tea this morning caught you unawares,

and the sound of trash cans and perhaps the cat rolling down the street holds no meaning

The official weather report this morning confirms it.

SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE GREAT BASIN AND NORTH FLOW ALOFT WILL BRING MODERATE OFFSHORE WINDS AT TIMES THROUGH AND BELOW PASSES AND CANYONS THROUGH THURSDAY.

The winds are back!

Mr. Wright over at SolSpot even says there's some surf!

woohoo!

Check the SeaHab site for local shore off shore video

Happy Birthday Sweetie!

Today is my wife's birthday.

I can't really express how much it means to be with her or what my life would be like without her.

I would probably be living in a van down by the river.

You know the guy, long hair, bearded, two teeth (not opposing) surfing a fish with one fin (also not opposing), pan handling money for a large coffee, room for cream with extra sugar.

I certainly won't be sitting here, writing another installment of 23Breaths.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Prana!

Sheriff John was an afternoon cartoon show host on LA TV in the sixties, since we both grew up watching the show it seemed like a good take on the traditional singing of Happy Birthday.

Green Bay 21 Steelers 10*

ChileDub in action at the Swamp 2011 - Photo by Lance Smith

* That least that was the score when I fell a sleep at half time.

Really not a bad game, as Super Bowls go.

Not enough interesting commercials this time.

I had hoped to get a surf in early Sunday morning.

The local spots didn't look bad when I did a drive by, but they close PCH in Huntington for the annual marathon and all the south state beach parking was filled up by the time I got there.

It would have been a great day for a bike ride but its was Super Bowl Sunday, I had been out to visit my folks on Saturday and there were things to do.

Pizza doesn't make itself you know!

Why is this glass half empty?  Tomatoes, Olives, Basil, Mushrooms and Garlic

ChileDub was in town last week. He, KenDog and Steve Pendarvis got together for some surf.

Pages of shots from Lance Smith here

They had invited me down but I was busy working on some website changes at work and had to pass.

Looks like they had a blast!
